PRIVACY POLICY
 

This statement encompasses all World Wide Web pages operated by Burns Science & Technology Charter School, Inc. (“BST”), and is intended to define the privacy of visitor information gathered and disseminated within them.

Introduction

BST respects the importance of responsibly using information collected on the Website. Personally Identifiable Information about visitors is not collected unless they agree to make such information available to BST. There is no legal requirement for visitors to provide any personally identifiable information on the Website. Visitors may contact the office, department or individual requesting information by phone, email or in writing. However, some of BST’s services and products may not be available to these visitors without providing Personally Identifiable Information.

Non-Personally Identifiable Information

BST collects anonymous web traffic data via tools such as Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager to generate summary statistics to help guide design considerations, determine successful website segments, and determine areas we can improve the Website's functionality. In some instances, BST may be compelled by existing laws of the United States or other applicable local, state and federal laws, and applicable policies, rules and guidelines, including those defined herein, to release non-personally identifiable information gathered from our web servers to law enforcement.

Personally Identifiable Information

All personal information submitted to BST via web forms is considered strictly confidential, unless stated otherwise. This information may be shared between offices, departments, groups or individuals within BST as needed or required, and as governed by the our data standards and information security policies. BST will not release personal information to third parties except as required by law.

Visitor Interaction

BST allows interaction with its employees via email and forms in online and PDF formats. Any information disclosed within these mediums is considered public information under the State of Florida's public records law (commonly known as the Sunshine Law). Visitors should exercise caution when deciding to disclose personal information in these forms.

Information Security

BST will take reasonable technical and organizational precautions to prevent the loss, misuse or alteration of personal information and will not provide, rent or sell personal information to third parties for marketing programs or any other purpose.

BST does not disclose Personally Identifiable Information, whether said information is identifiable explicitly or implicitly, except in the following cases:

 

  • To employees, contractors and affiliated organizations of BST when necessary to conduct business, and only upon their agreement to not subsequently disclose the information.

  • When required to do so by law.

  • When BST believes in good faith disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect its property, its rights, third parties and the public well-being.

 

If you have supplied BST with your email address, the school may choose to occasionally email you news, notices or other matters of interest. Emails sent in this way will include opt-out options within them.

Student and Child Privacy

Compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

BST complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which restricts the release of educational records. For more details on FERPA please visit the U.S. Department of Education's FERPA website.

Compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

BST complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which requires parental consent be obtained before individuals under the age of 13 can submit any personal information via our website or tools available on it. SOCIAL MEDIA DISCLAIMER

 

Florida has a very broad public records law. As a result, any written communication created or received by BST officials and employees will be made available to the public and media, upon request, unless otherwise exempt. If you do not want your comment and subsequent identifying information released in response to a public-records request, do not comment. Under Florida law, email addresses are public records. If you do not want your email address released in response to a public records request, do not send electronic mail to BST work locations or employees.

The purpose of this site and any social media accounts is to disseminate information on specific BST topics. It is not intended to be a public forum. Comments posted to this platform will be consistently monitored for comments deemed inappropriate. These posts may be removed.

​

While discussions are encouraged, this page and any social media account is not intended to circumvent regular communication channels for sharing personal issues and concerns, including personnel matters and student concerns.  We expect that participants will treat each other with respect. BST does not intend to create a public forum, but to maintain a forum related to topics posted by the school, with language appropriate for its audience (including minors).

Comments regarding a personal issue with BST, a school, student, or a staff member will be removed.

BST reserves the right to delete submissions that contain vulgar language, personal attacks of any kind, or offensive comments that target or disparage any ethnic, racial or religious groups. Comments should not be obscene in nature or serve as an attack against any person or group. Comments should not promote the violation of school rules or substantial disruption of any school's orderly operation.

Further, BST reserves the right to delete comments that are:

 

  • Comments not related to a topic posted by BST;

  • Profane language or content;

  • Content that promotes, fosters or perpetuates discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, gender, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, national origin, physical or mental disability or sexual orientation;

  • Sexual content or links to sexual content;

  • Solicitations of commerce;

  • Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity;

  • Information that may tend to compromise the safety or security of the public;

  • Content that violates a copyright, trademark or other legal ownership interest;

  • Accusations of immoral or illegal conduct.

BST disclaims responsibility and liability to the fullest extent allowed by law for any inappropriate content or posting on any network or website.

Commercial advertising content on this site is not controlled nor endorsed by BST.

This policy may be amended or modified at any time.
