At Burns Sci-Tech, we believe in leading by example, and recently, three of our very own teachers did just that in an extraordinary way. Mrs. Galerno, Mrs. Lagana, and Ms. Harris laced up their running shoes and took on the Keys 100, a legendary 100-mile ultramarathon relay race that winds through the stunning, sun-soaked landscapes of the Florida Keys.

Their team finished with an incredible time of 17 hours, 26 minutes, and 46 seconds, placing 7th among all-female relay teams, a major accomplishment in a race known for its intensity and endurance. From the first leg to the final stretch, they ran through heat, exhaustion, and the physical demands of the road, but their determination never wavered.

What makes this story even more meaningful is who these runners are. These are the same women who greet our students with smiles each morning, who lead lessons, guide projects, and inspire learning. Over the weekend, they stepped out of the classroom and onto the pavement to challenge themselves in one of the most grueling endurance races in the country, and they did it together, as a team.

Along the way, there were countless laughs, shared stories, and moments that will become lifelong memories. It wasn’t just about finishing the race, it was about setting a goal, supporting one another, and pushing through the tough parts. And in that way, this race is so much more than a run, it’s a lesson in perseverance, grit, and the power of community.

For our students, seeing their teachers achieve something so bold and ambitious sends a powerful message: you can do hard things. With preparation, dedication, and teamwork, you can accomplish goals that once felt out of reach. Whether it’s passing a tough test, learning a new skill, or running 100 miles, the mindset is the same—keep going, stay positive, and don’t give up.

We are incredibly proud of Mrs. Galerno, Mrs. Lagana, and Ms. Harris for showing us what it means to live with courage and commitment. Their passion, strength, and example go far beyond the race. They remind us all what it means to keep chasing dreams, one mile at a time.

Congratulations, ladies—your Burns family is cheering for you every step of the way!
