Providing students with a high-quality education is the shared goal of schools across Florida. A newly released report from the Florida Department of Education highlights how Florida's charter schools continue to make significant strides in academic achievement, outperforming traditional public schools in many key performance areas.

The Florida Department of Education recently released its annual report, "Student Achievement in Florida's Charter Schools: A Comparison of the Performance of Charter School Students with Traditional Public School Students", comparing academic performance between charter school students and their peers in traditional public schools. The report analyzes statewide assessment data in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, as well as student learning gains.

What the Report Found

According to the Florida Department of Education, charter school students continue to perform well across multiple academic measures.

Some of the report's key findings include:

  • Charter school students outperformed traditional public school students in 55 of 77 academic achievement comparisons during the 2024–2025 school year, an improvement from 53 of 77 comparisons the previous year.

  • Charter school students demonstrated higher learning gains in most of the 96 comparisons measured across grade levels and student groups.

  • Positive outcomes were also reported for several student populations, including economically disadvantaged students and students with disabilities.

  • More than 400,000 students are now enrolled in Florida charter schools, reflecting continued family confidence in school choice and innovative educational opportunities.

Why This Matters

Academic achievement is about more than test scores; it's about ensuring students are growing every year. The report's focus on both proficiency and learning gains provides a broader picture of student success and highlights the impact of personalized instruction and innovative educational models.
