Our 2nd graders recently wrapped up an incredible Bat Week that truly transformed their hallway and classrooms into a bat cave experience. The transformation was nothing short of amazing. The hallway was filled with hanging bats swooping from the ceiling, and the sound of excitement and curiosity filled the air as students moved through their “caves.”

Each classroom took on its own unique design, reflecting the creativity of our teachers and students. Some rooms glowed with the soft flicker of LED candles, while others used headlamps to guide the way, making students feel like real scientists exploring dark caves and studying bats in their natural habitat.

Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of hands-on lessons and activities that brought their learning to life. They read stories about bats, watched videos, and created bat art. The enthusiasm was contagious students were eager to share what they learned with anyone who stopped by to visit their classrooms.

When I stopped by Ms. Harris's class and asked what cool facts they had learned, every single hand went up. The students could hardly wait to share what they knew: bats use echoes to find their way around, there are more than 1,400 species of bats in the world, and bats are the only mammals that can truly fly. Those were just a few of the fascinating facts they shared, but if you ask them yourself, you’ll learn even more impressive details about these remarkable creatures.

Students also watched videos about the Bat House at the University of Florida, one of the largest occupied bat houses in the world. The videos captured their attention and sparked plenty of excitement, and we encourage families to check it out; it’s a great experience for the whole family and an opportunity to see what they’ve been learning come to life.

Bat Week is a hands-on learning experience that fully immerses students in discovery. By combining creativity, exploration, and science, our 2nd graders not only learned about bats but also developed a deeper appreciation for the natural world around them. It was a wonderful reminder of how learning can be both educational and unforgettable when curiosity takes flight.

A huge thank you to our 2nd-grade team for another successful Bat Week! Your creativity, planning, and enthusiasm make this a memorable experience that our students look forward to every year.
