Our 4th graders recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to St. Augustine, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States! Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers, St. Augustine is a city steeped in history, culture, and stories that bring Florida’s past vividly to life.

Students had the chance to explore historic landmarks such as the Castillo de San Marcos, a massive stone fortress built to defend the city from pirates and invaders. Walking along the cobblestone streets of the Old City, they saw historic homes, the old jail, and the general store, learning what daily life was like for the people who lived here centuries ago. They discovered firsthand how important the train systems were back then for transporting supplies and goods, a key part of how communities grew and thrived.

The trip wasn’t all about buildings and history books; it was also full of fun, hands-on learning! Students were able to engage with interactive demonstrations, try out historic tools, and even have close encounters with the peacocks that roam the historic sites. The peacocks, with their vibrant feathers and curious personalities, were a highlight for many, adding a touch of excitement to the day.

This field trip offered a perfect balance of education and excitement. Students connected what they’ve been learning in the classroom to real-world history, making it tangible and memorable.

From understanding the strategic importance of the Castillo de San Marcos to experiencing daily life in the general store, every stop provided lessons that will stay with them long after the bus ride home.

Trips like this remind us how powerful experiential learning can be. Our students didn’t just read about history, they lived it for a day, exploring the sights, sounds, and even wildlife that make St. Augustine so unique.

At Burns Science and Technology Charter School, we are proud to offer experiences like this that combine fun, education, and hands-on learning, helping our students grow into curious and knowledgeable learners.
