Duct Tape Duel and Inflatable Races Kick Off End-of-Year Fun!

The gym was filled with laughter, cheers, and nonstop excitement as Burns Sci Tech officially kicked off end-of-the-year celebrations with the Duct Tape Duel and Teacher Inflatable Races.

The event all started earlier this year when Coach G ran the New York City Marathon with Grow Healthy Kids, helping provide shoes for many of our students.

After learning that Ms. Galerno was also a runner, Coach G nominated her to take on the marathon challenge this coming year with Grow Healthy Kids as well. In true Burns spirit, Ms. Galerno decided to turn the challenge into a little friendly competition and officially challenged Coach G to a Duct Tape Duel fundraiser to support his upcoming soccer program.

The festivities began with four unforgettable teams of inflatable characters, each representing one of our school houses and competing for house points in a series of hilarious relay-style games.

Team Altruismo

Representing Altruismo was an unforgettable lineup featuring the Upside Down Clown, a capybara, and Coach Carignan riding an alien.

Team Sollevare

Sollevare brought plenty of personality to the competition with a cow, unicorn, giraffe, and shark.

Team Onraka

Onraka entered the gym with a banana, Ms. Hunt riding a chicken, a soccer ball, and an eagle.

Team Reveur

Reveur rounded out the competition with a muscle-bound chicken, SpongeBob, a sumo wrestler, and Ms. Tudeen riding an alien.

The teams competed in several challenges throughout the event, earning house points along the way while students packed the gym cheering them on.

The first event was a scooter relay race. Two members from each team raced down the gym with one sitting on a scooter while the other pushed. Once they reached the other side, they switched roles and raced back to the finish line.

Next came a ball toss challenge where teammates lined up across from one another. One team member tossed balls while the other attempted to catch them using a laundry basket. If a ball was dropped, the rest of the team jumped in to help recover it before continuing.

The excitement continued with an obstacle course race. Racers had to weave through a series of challenges including circling mats, stepping over hoops, maneuvering around obstacles, and circling cones before racing back to the finish line.

The final competition was a full relay race with each participant sprinting from one end of the gym to the other to see who would cross the finish line first.

After an afternoon filled with laughter, teamwork, and plenty of inflatable chaos, Reveur emerged as the overall winner with an impressive 1,400 points, taking first place in three of the four events. Sollevare followed closely behind with 1,200 points, while Onraka earned 900 points and Altruismo finished with 500 points.

A huge thank you goes out to our incredible teachers and staff members who are always willing to jump in, have fun, and create unforgettable memories for our students. Their energy and willingness to participate are a huge part of what makes Burns Sci Tech so special.

But of course, everyone was waiting for the main event, the Duct Tape Duel.

Students had spent weeks voting with donations to determine whether Coach G or Ms. Galerno would be taped to the gym wall. By the start of the event, the fundraiser had already reached 47% of its $2,000 goal with $950 raised and support from 33 donors.

And the clear “winner” — or loser, depending on who you ask — was Coach G.

With almost all the votes going his way, it was finally time to see if the duct tape would actually hold. Using nearly five rolls of duct tape, the help of his daughter Callie, and an incredible student drum roll echoing through the gym, Coach G was carefully secured to the wall while students watched in suspense.

Many students were skeptical that it would actually work, but the moment the chair was removed from beneath him, the gym erupted. Coach G was officially stuck to the wall.

Coach G was an incredible sport throughout the entire event, and in his short time as part of the Burns family, he has already made a tremendous impact on our students and campus community. All proceeds from the event will support the upcoming soccer program, helping continue to grow opportunities for our student athletes.

We would still love to reach the remainder of our fundraising goal, so we encourage everyone to continue showing support for Coach G and his new soccer program through donations.
