Burns Sci Tech is a Leader in Me School

The Leader in Me Program is an evidence-based, whole-school transformation model designed to empower students with leadership and life skills necessary for success. Rooted in Stephen Covey’s "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," the program equips students with the tools to become self-reliant, set goals, prioritize tasks, and work well with others. By fostering a culture of leadership, responsibility, and accountability, The Leader in Me encourages students to take charge of their learning and growth, creating a positive school environment that nurtures future-ready leaders.

Leadership is Part of Every Day

Leader in Me is woven throughout the school day. Students practice leadership skills in their classrooms, during collaborative projects, through service opportunities, and in their interactions with classmates and teachers.
Our elementary students learn to:

  • Take responsibility for their actions and learning.

  • Set personal and academic goals.

  • Build confidence through leadership opportunities.

  • Work collaboratively and value the strengths of others.

  • Communicate with respect, empathy, and integrity.

  • Develop organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.

  • Celebrate growth while learning from challenges.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Leader in Me is built around Stephen R. Covey's internationally recognized 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, adapted for children:

  • Be Proactive® – I am responsible for my choices.

  • Begin with the End in Mind® – I have a plan and set goals.

  • Put First Things First® – I prioritize what is most important.

  • Think Win-Win® – I seek solutions that benefit everyone.

  • Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood® – I listen before I speak.

  • Sharpen the Saw® – I take care of my mind, body, heart, and spirit.

Preparing Students for Life

The leadership, communication, and character skills students develop through Leader in Me complement our STEM-focused curriculum and prepare them for success both inside and outside the classroom. Whether leading a classroom activity, collaborating on a STEM challenge, serving their community, or supporting a fellow student, Burns students learn that leadership is about making a positive difference every day.
At Burns Science & Technology Charter School, we aren't just preparing students for their next grade level—we're helping them become confident learners, compassionate classmates, and the leaders of tomorrow.
