Discover Your Passion Through EiSTEAM Electives

Learning doesn't stop with core academics. At Burns Sci-Tech, our EiSTEAM Elective Program gives students the opportunity to explore their interests, develop new talents, and discover future career pathways through engaging, hands-on experiences.
 

Whether you're designing video games, flying drones, creating art, performing on stage, building robots, exploring biomedical science, studying psychology, or preparing for a career in business, engineering, education, or the skilled trades, EiSTEAM electives allow you to personalize your educational journey while developing real-world skills.

 

Our electives are designed to complement the Burns Sci-Tech mission by encouraging creativity, innovation, collaboration, leadership, and problem-solving. Students are challenged to think beyond the classroom, explore new possibilities, and gain experiences that prepare them for high school, college, and future careers.

Aviation Pilot Program

The Private Pilot Ground School course prepares students for entry into the aviation industry. Students explore career opportunities and requirements of a professional aviation pilot/mechanic. Students study general shop safety, fundamentals of flight, FAA regulations, meteorology, aircraft communications, propulsion, and navigation systems, flight planning, communication and analytical skills, applied sciences, safe aircraft operation and principles, flight training processes, and airport environments.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operations

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of drone technology, including aircraft systems, flight principles, airspace regulations, and safety procedures. Students learn FAA rules governing UAS operation, along with career pathways in fields like aerial photography, agriculture, public safety, and infrastructure inspection.

Business and Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurs are required to take this pathway, but it is an optional college and career pathway for Innovators. Business Skills: Students simulate being an employee, manager, and/or company owner to solve real-world problems & understand business principles. Financial Literacy Skills: This includes preparing a budget, knowing how much to save, on deciding favorable loan terms, and understanding the impacts to credit.

Personal Financial Literacy

The course covers budgeting, saving, and investing, along with filing taxes, opening bank accounts, and understanding insurance, plus responsible credit card use, credit scores, and applying for college financial aid.

Engineering & Robotics 1

Students learn the basic STEM principles of engineering in the classroom, as well as discover real-world examples of animatronics in action. We use a variety of hands-on materials to construct devices, and the platforms of VEX and LEGO are the key vehicles to explore the basic understanding of robotics. Students frequently participate in engineering design challenges as they develop problem-solving skills.

Video Game Creation & Design

Students will have the chance to learn about the game industry in this class from a beginner perspective. Students will be taught the business of video games and practicing different jobs in the industry. Students will also group up together and create an idea for a game that can be produced later in the program.

AP Computer Science A

Introduces students to programming and computer science using Java, covering core concepts like data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design. Students learn to write, test, and debug code while developing problem-solving and logical thinking skills applicable across STEM fields. Equivalent to a first-semester college course in computer science, it's well-suited for students interested in software development, engineering, or related majors.

Social Media and Business Marketing (Parent Permission is required)

Become an Influencer in your world! Develop marketing skills using current social media platforms. Learn how to brand yourself, your school, and your business. Follow trends within social media and use them to your advantage. Online safety skills will be emphasized. This course is designed to provide students with an in-depth study of marketing in a free enterprise society and includes advertising, promotion, product development and branding, selling, and marketing research. This course also includes electronic media in marketing, and e-Commerce marketing.

Multimedia Journalism

Develop skills in journalism on multiple platforms to build a traditional, digital, and video yearbook.

Agriscience Foundations 1

This core course is designed to develop competencies in the areas of agricultural history and the global impact of agriculture; career opportunities; scientific and research concepts; biological and physical science principles; environmental principles; agriscience safety; principles of leadership; and agribusiness, employability, and human relations skills in agriscience. Laboratory-based activities are an integral part of this course. These include the safe use and application of appropriate technology, scientific testing and observation equipment.

Animal Science

This course is designed to develop competencies in the areas of safety; animal behavior; animal welfare; animal control; and employability skills.

Biomedical Science

Students interested in pursuing a career in the medical field should consider this sequence of courses. Focus of study includes: human medicine, genetics, physiology, and public health. Students will actively learn about a variety of real and fictitious case studies as they explore topics from forensics to medical interventions. A full-spectrum of medical occupations will be researched from x-ray technicians to pharmacists as we prepare students for the growing medical industry.

Weightlifting

Find solutions to improve the health and wellness of people. This program leads to personal training certification & how to design workout programs.

Experimental Science Honors

Learn how to be a research scientist through scientific inquiry, measurement, problem-solving, & experimental procedures. Participate in Science competitions.

Forensic Science

This course introduces students to the application of scientific principles in criminal investigations, covering topics such as crime scene analysis, fingerprinting, DNA analysis, toxicology, and forensic evidence collection. Students engage in hands-on labs and case studies to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills used in real-world forensic investigations. The course is well-suited for students interested in careers in criminal justice, law enforcement, or forensic science.

Intro to Teaching

These courses are specifically designed for students interested in teaching as they will be working closely with students and teachers in K-5 classrooms. Students will develop strong leadership and communication skills via interactive lessons with a hands-on, real-world approach. Students will be role models to their younger peers, showcasing respect, teamwork, and responsibility, as they manage small group activities, learn/integrate classroom management strategies, and create/incorporate lessons within the classroom. Students will also plan and execute cross-campus events and celebrations throughout the year.

Spanish 1 - 4

Spanish 1 introduces students to the target language and various cultures. Students should expect to become familiar with common vocabulary terms and phrases.

Student Government

The SGA elective introduces students to student government and leadership through hands-on involvement in school decision-making. Students will learn how to represent their peers, plan school activities, and develop communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. It’s a great opportunity for students interested in making a positive impact on their school community.

Building Trades

The TRADE Program gives students real world experiences, presentations from professionals in various fields of work and the hands-on knowledge to succeed as a DIY homeowner or a skilled tradesperson

Fashion Design

Burns SciTech is excited to bring Fashion Design to our school! Here, you will learn the creative and technical skills needed for the fashion industry. We will cover design fundamentals, textiles, pattern making, garment construction, and fashion history. Fashion Design I will have students learning the basics of sewing and give them skills for future careers or hobbies.

OJT

On-Job-Training – get high school elective credit while working at a job. Juniors and Seniors only.

Creating 2-D Art / 3-D Art

Continue your CREATIVE experience! Students will develop original Artworks. Drawing Studies (Pencil, colored pencil, ink, Charcoal, Chalk/oil pastel) Painting Studies (Watercolor, Acrylic) Printmaking Studies, & (Collage) Mixed Media Techniques for 2-D Art; Learn sculptural assemblage (relief & in the round), wire, clay/ceramics, cold and warm glass work, such as etching/fusing/slumping (bending) techniques to make 3 Dimensional sculptural and functional objects. Students explore the science of kiln work and temperatures of ceramic and glass with demonstrations and hands-on projects for 3-D Art.

Portfolio Development: 2-D Design Honors

Students experiment with the media and techniques used to create a variety of two-dimensional (2-D) artworks through the development of skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, and/or design. Students practice, sketch, and manipulate the structural elements of art to improve mark making and/or the organizational principles of design in a composition from observation, research, and/or imagination. Through the critique process, students evaluate and respond to their own work and that of their peers. This course incorporates hands-on activities and consumption of art materials.

AP 2-D Art & Design

This is a rigorous program for College credit! Students create a portfolio series. 60% Sustained Investigation (visual and written) and 40% Selected five best artworks. Prerequisite: Portfolio Development: 2-D Design Honors

AP 2D Art Portfolio

A studio-based course where students develop a portfolio demonstrating skill, inquiry, and practice in two-dimensional art-making across a range of media. Rather than a single exam, students submit a body of work showing sustained investigation and technical growth.

Musical Theatre 1-4

Students must audition to join theater class. They will work on audition skills and prepare an audition for their desired role in the school musical. Once assigned a role, they will memorize lines and learn songs. They are required to be a part of all performances, both in school and after school. There are some after-school and weekend rehearsals that students are expected to attend.

Dance Techniques

Students in this year-long, entry-level course, designed for those having no prior dance instruction, learn foundational skills in two or more dance styles. Their development of fundamental dance technique is enriched and enlivened through study of works by a variety of diverse artists, developing genre-specific movement vocabulary and dance terminology, and building knowledge and skills related to somatic practices, dance composition, analysis of effort and outcomes, dance history and culture, collaborative work, and rehearsal and performance protocols.

Psychology

Through the study of psychology, students acquire an understanding of and an appreciation for human behavior, behavior interaction and the progressive development of individuals. The content examined in this first introductory course includes major theories and orientations of psychology, psychological methodology, memory and cognition, human growth and development, personality, abnormal behavior, psychological therapies, stress/coping strategies, and mental health.

AP Psychology

Surveys the scientific study of behavior and mental processes, including topics like cognition, development, personality, abnormal psychology, and neuroscience. Introduces research methods and psychological theories through an evidence-based lens.
