AP Capstone at Burns Sci-Tech

AP Capstone is the highest level of academic rigor available—alongside the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme—and goes beyond traditional AP, Dual Enrollment, AICE, and Honors coursework by emphasizing research, critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world problem solving.
At Burns Sci-Tech, you'll enjoy a personalized learning experience, with schedules designed around your interests and academic goals. Students who successfully complete AP Seminar earn the distinguished AP Capstone blazer, recognizing their commitment to academic excellence.
As an added benefit, eligible AP Capstone students may qualify for Florida Academic Scholars (FAS)—the highest Bright Futures scholarship level—without needing SAT or ACT scores, providing a unique pathway to full Bright Futures eligibility while preparing for success in college and beyond.

AP COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

AP Seminar
An interdisciplinary course that develops critical thinking, collaboration, academic research, evidence evaluation, written argument, and multimedia presentation skills using topics selected by the student.

AP Research
An interdisciplinary course that develops advanced critical-thinking and academic research skills. Students learn research methods and conduct an in-depth investigation of a topic of their choice.

AP U.S. History
Explores American history from pre-Columbian societies to the present, including political, social, economic, and cultural developments. Students analyze primary sources, historical arguments, and change over time. Culminates in a College Board exam that may earn college credit.

AP English Language and Composition
Focuses on rhetoric and composition. Students analyze how writers use language and develop clear, evidence-based arguments. The course emphasizes nonfiction texts, including essays, speeches, and journalism, and prepares students for college-level analytical and persuasive writing.

AP English Literature and Composition
Focuses on close reading and literary analysis of poetry, drama, and prose fiction from various periods. Students develop skills in interpreting literary techniques and constructing well-supported critical essays.

AP Biology
A college-level introduction to evolution, cellular processes, genetics, and ecology, with an emphasis on inquiry-based laboratory work. Students design experiments, analyze data, and apply scientific reasoning to complex biological systems.

AP Chemistry
Covers atomic structure, bonding, reactions, thermodynamics, and equilibrium at a college level. The course emphasizes laboratory work and quantitative problem-solving to prepare students for STEM-focused college coursework.

AP Physics 1
An algebra-based introductory physics course covering Newtonian mechanics, including motion, forces, energy, momentum, and rotational dynamics. Combines conceptual understanding, hands-on laboratories, and problem-solving. No calculus background is required.

AP Physics C: Mechanics
A calculus-based course covering kinematics, Newton's laws, work and energy, momentum, rotational motion, and gravitation at a rigorous college level. It uses calculus to analyze motion and forces in greater depth than AP Physics 1 and is designed for students pursuing engineering, physics, or other STEM fields.

AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism
A calculus-based course exploring electric and magnetic fields, circuits, electromagnetism, and related phenomena. It builds on the mathematical and analytical skills developed in AP Physics C: Mechanics and uses calculus to model and solve complex physics problems.

AP Precalculus
Prepares students for calculus by deepening their understanding of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Emphasizes modeling real-world phenomena and building the analytical foundation needed for AP Calculus.

AP Calculus AB
Covers differential and integral calculus of single-variable functions, including limits, derivatives and their applications, definite and indefinite integrals, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. It is roughly equivalent to a first-semester college calculus course.

AP Calculus BC
Covers all AP Calculus AB topics plus sequences, series, parametric and polar functions, and more advanced integration techniques. The course moves at a faster pace and is equivalent to a full year of college calculus.

AP Statistics
Introduces data collection, analysis, probability, distributions, hypothesis testing, and regression. Emphasizes real-world application and interpretation rather than heavy computation.

AP Psychology
Surveys the scientific study of behavior and mental processes, including cognition, development, personality, abnormal psychology, neuroscience, research methods, and psychological theories through an evidence-based lens.

AP 2-D Art and Design Portfolio
A studio-based course in which students develop a portfolio demonstrating skill, inquiry, and practice in two-dimensional art-making across a range of media. Instead of a single exam, students submit a body of work demonstrating sustained investigation and technical growth.

AP Computer Science A
Introduces programming and computer science using Java, including data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design. Students write, test, and debug code while developing problem-solving and logical-thinking skills. It is equivalent to a first-semester college computer science course.
